Zero Waste International Alliance

Working towards a world without waste! The Zero Waste International Alliance has been established to promote positive alternatives to landfill and incineration and to raise community awareness of the social and economic benefits to be gained when waste is regarded as a resource upon which both employment and business opportunities can be built.

The Zero Waste International Alliance:

  • initiates and facilitates research and information sharing for the promotion of Zero Waste;
  • builds capacity to effectively implement Zero Waste projects;
  • sets standards for the application of Zero Waste strategies.

The organisation operates on a international, national and local level and involves all sectors of society (governments, businesses, institutions, communities and individuals). Zero Waste works to guide people in changing their lifestyles and practices to emulate sustainable natural cycles, where all discarded materials are designed to become resources for others to use.

The goal is to design and manage products and processes to systematically avoid and eliminate the volume and toxicity of waste and materials, conserve and recover all resources, and not burn or bury them. Implementing the Zero Waste strategy will eliminate all discharges to land, water or air that are a threat to planetary, human, animal or plant health.

In order to help businesses and communities in their goal to reduce waste, Zero Waste has developed practical guidelines. These guidelines are outlined for businesses in the “Zero Waste Business Principles” and for communities in the “Global Principles for Zero Waste Communities”.

If businesses and communities achieve over 90% diversion of waste from landfills and incinerators they are considered to be successful in achieving Zero Waste. The Alliance also made a hierarchical list of best practices that can lead to Zero Waste. In order of importance these are:

  •     Reduce, refuse and return
  •     End subsidies for wasting
  •     Product and packaging redesign
  •     Clean production and takebacks
  •     Reuse, repair and remanufacture
  •     Recycle, compost and digest
  •     Regulate (bans, biological energy recovery, landfills with pre-processing).

The Alliance has representatives and partner organizations in North and South America, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Africa and Asia and the UK. Zero Waste International Alliance is a web based not for profit organization.
