World Future Council

The World Future Council brings the interests of future generations to the center of policy making. The World Future Council (WFC) consists of 50 respected personalities from all five continents. They represent governments, parliaments, the arts, civil society, academia and the business world. Together they form a voice for the rights of future generations.

The Council addresses challenges to our common future and provides decision-makers with effective policy solutions. In-depth research underpins advocacy work for international agreements, regional policy frameworks and national lawmaking and thus produces practical and tangible results.

The WFC makes politicians aware that they have an ethical responsibility to assess every decision-making process on the basis of how it will affect future generations. In close collaboration with civil society groups, members of parliament, governments, businesses and international organisations research is conducted to improve legislation and regulations. On the basis of this research they then advise policymakers and offer them support with the concrete implementation and execution of new policies.

The WFC is an independent non-profit organisation with no interest in short-term profit or prestige, autonomous from governmental and institutional interests.

To identify holistic solutions on a wide range of issues and to enable the application of these solutions, the WFC has created the following programmes:

● Future Justice

● Climate and Energy

● Sustainable Ecosystems

● Sustainable Economies

● Peace and Disarmament

The Council with its 50 members meets once a year in Hamburg to decide about a work programme and to form expert commissions and working groups. The World Future Council has its Head Office in Hamburg and further offices in London, Geneva and Johannesburg with a total of 19 full-time and freelance staff.
