Unternimm die Zukunft

Unternimm die Zukunft (Untertake the Future) is a campaign for the introduction of the unconditional basic income, launched in 2005 in Germany by billionaire Götz Werner.

Apart from being one of Germany’s most successful business men – he is the founder of the well-known dm chemist chain, which has over 1200 chemist shops in 10 countries and an annual turnover of over 6 billion euros – Werner is also a former business professor affiliated with the University of Karsruhe.

These qualifications have generated a lot of attention in Germany and elsewhere for the basic income campaign. Werner has made hundreds of public appearances and has given dozens of print, radio and TV interviews.  As a result, a relatively broad debate about the introduction of the basic income has developed in Germany.

Werner comes up with various arguments for the basic income. Due to the high productivity of modern workers, it isn’t possible for everyone to have a job. Without a basic income as a civil right, the jobless are discriminated against. A basic income would free people from existential fears, and give them the opportunity to do other things besides paid work, such as volunteer work, arts or care for family members. Werner argues a basic income could be financed through higher value added tax (VAT), while simultaneously lowering the income tax.

Due to his unorthodox business approach, which allows a lot of freedom to employees and local branches to run affairs as they see fit and treats employees with care and respect, Werner has won several prizes and awards.
