Slow Money

Slow Money is a movement that promotes investments in local ecological farms and food enterprises. Their slogan: Put your money where your food is!

Since mid 2010 Slow Money has invested more than $35 million in over 300 small food enterprises, mostly in the US and a few abroad. Members of Slow Money include investors, food entrepreneurs, organic farmers and consumers.

The Slow Money Alliance wants to enhance food security, food safety and food access; improve nutrition and health; promote cultural, ecological and economic diversity; strengthen local resilience and accelerate the transition from an economy based on extraction and consumption into an economy based on preservation and restoration.

The Slow Money Alliance derives its inspiration from the book “Inquiries into the Nature of Slow Money: Investing As If Food, Farms and Fertility Mattered”, published in 2009 by its founder Woody Tasch. The goal of the Alliance is to bring people together and start a conversation about money that is too fast; about finance that is disconnected from people and place; and about healthy alternatives for a profit driven economy.

According to Slow Money investing in local food makes perfect sense: “In contrast to far-flung multi-national corporations and financial institutions that are too large to understand, small food enterprises are comprehensible. We live near them. We can connect to them directly. Their entrepreneurs are our fellow community members. They create jobs, promote cultural, ecological and economic diversity, and build robust local food systems.”

Central to Slow Money's mission is the building of regional stakeholder networks consisting of food entrepreneurs, NGO leaders, farmers and investors committed to financing local food systems. In order to promote their vision and attract investors, Slow Money organizes national gatherings and regional events.

The Slow Money movement is also beginning to gain a foothold in Switzerland, France, Canada, Australia and Japan.
