Slow Food

Slow Food is a global, grassroots organization with supporters in 150 countries around the world who are linking the pleasure of good food with a commitment to their community and the environment. It is a non-profit member-supported association.

Slow Food was founded in 1989 to counter the rise of fast food and fast life, the disappearance of local food traditions and people’s dwindling interest in the food they eat, where it comes from, how it tastes and how our food choices affect the rest of the world. Slow Food envisions a world in which all people can access and enjoy food that is good for them, good for those who grow it and good for the planet.

Today, Slow Food has a network of 100,000 members in 153 countries – grouped in to 1,300 local sectors called convivia – they develop activities, projects and events at a local, regional and global levels. These currently include:

● More than 5000 Slow Food initiatives each year

● 10,000 small producers involved in 314 Presidia projects

● 1000 products at risk of extinction promoted through the Ark of Taste catalog

● 1,300 food education activities and 350 school gardens in 100 countries

● Terra Madre network activities which involve 2,000 food communities, 1,000 cooks, 500 academics and 1,000 young activists.

Slow Food believes that collectively consumer choices can bring great change to how food is cultivated and produced. To highlight this, they consider themselves co-producers, because a consumer who is informed about where and how his food is produced and actively supports local producers, becomes an active part of the production process.

Each of Slow Food's 100,000 members around the world are part of a convivium that brings the Slow Food philosophy to life through the events and activities they organize in their communities: From simple shared meals and tastings, to visits to local producers and farms, conferences and discussions, film screenings/festivals, taste education courses for children and adults, promoting farmers' markets or supporting local and international campaigns. Members enjoy coming together to share the everyday joys of food and to get to know their local food and producers and spread that knowledge.

Other bodies that came out of the Slow Food initiative are the ‘Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity’, the ‘Terra Madre Foundation’, the ‘University of Gastronomic Sciences’, and ‘Slow Food Education’. The ‘Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity’ protects the environment, defends food biodiversity, promotes sustainable agriculture and supports small-scale food producers and values their traditional knowledge.

The ‘Terra Madre network’ was launched by Slow Food to give a voice and visibility to the small-scale farmers, breeders, fishers and food artisans around the world whose approach to food production protects the environment and communities. The network brings them together with academics, cooks, consumers and youth groups so that they can join forces in working to improve the food system.

‘Slow Food Education’ supports an innovative approach based on the reawakening and training of the senses and the study of all aspects of food: from field to fork. By working with schools and local producers, organizing conferences with authors and experts, and introducing ‘good, clean and fair' food education at community events, these projects increase awareness and bring food issues to people from all walks of life.
