Referendum Platform

The Referendum Platform is a small foundation that promotes the use of direct democracy (initiative and referendum) in the Netherlands. It publishes articles and books, does public speaking, conducts research, lobbies politicians and conducts campaigns for the introduction of initiative and referendum. It also takes part in a European network.

The Referendum Platform ran several successful campaigns:

- In 2000-2001 the Referendum Platform ran a successful campaign to improve incoming legislation on the referendum.

- In 2003-2005 it conducted a successful lobbying campaign for holding a referendum on the European Constitution.

- In 2006-2008 it campaigned for the introduction of the European Citizen Initiative in the new European treaty, and was also successful.

In the last few years, the activities have been on a backburner due to a lack of funding and too few political openings during the right-wing Dutch governments.
