Rainforest Alliance

Rainforest Alliance is an international non-profit organization operating in more than 70 countries to conserve tropical forests and biodiversity. Their mission is to develop and promote economically viable and socially sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behaviour.

The Rainforest Alliance, headquartered in New York City, is empowering people to protect biodiversity and improve livelihoods by helping them realize greater economic benefits by ensuring that ecosystems within and around their operations are protected and that their workers are well-trained and enjoy safe conditions, proper sanitation, health care and housing.

The Rainforest Alliance is helping to arrest the major drivers of deforestation by ensuring that millions of acres of working forests, farms, ranch lands and hotel properties are managed according to rigorous sustainability standards. Take for instance the rapidly growing palm oil industry (palm oil is used in 50% of the items we buy), that although it has the ability to alleviate poverty, is also the cause of deforestation of the rain forests in Asia and South and Central America. Rainforest Alliance is now involved in “deforestation-free” palm oil. They act as a ‘farm consultant’, walking hand in hand with farmers and companies towards better production methods. The Rainforest Alliance uses local third-party consultants ‘guides’ to annually audit and certify palm oil farms. Because who knows better than the locals what needs to be protected? A company’s product does not have to be 100% sustainable, but at least 30%, but the producer has to increase sustainability by 15% annually.  Rainforest Alliance has set this rule to make the step to sustainable production as low as possible and to help producers improve their sustainability.

The organization works to help people of all ages understand the role that every person plays in biodiversity conservation. They do this through their education site—developed in conjunction with education experts—and their Adopt-a-Rainforest program. They also work with schools around the world, to help teachers implement the lesson plans. As of June 2015, 5,700 teachers have been trained in the environmental curricula, and more than 84,000 students have studied it.
