Pachamama Alliance

Pachamama Alliance is committed to empowering the indigenous people of the Amazon rainforest in Ecuador to preserve their land and their culture. The Alliance was established in 1996 in answer to a call by the Achuar, indigenous inhabitants of the Ecuadorian rainforest. The Achuar had themselves awakened  to the threat of oil companies and extractive industry invading and destroying the rainforest habitat of their neighbors in Ecuador.

The Achuar sent out a call for help to the part of the world coming to destroy them to find partners to halt this destruction The call was answered in 1995 by a group of people including Bill and Lynne Twis, and John Perkins. At the invitation of the Achuar leaders, they travelled to the rainforest in order to learn more about their culture and way of living. Together they asked the question what would be the best approach to overcome these problems. The Achuar had already come to the conclusion that the demand for oil did not just come from the oil companies, but is first and foremost a consequence of the Western urge for endless consumption to the detriment of nature. They called this the ‘Dream of the Modern World’.

Since its inception in 1996, Pachamama Alliance has developed the following tools in their work to wake up the Western world:

  • The organisation of ecological journeys to the rainforest, enabling visitors to get to know the beauty of the rainforest and the wisdom of the Achuar’s and the Alliance’s vision to preserve the rainforest.
  • The creation of economic alternatives that bring about other options than selling land to oil companies.
  • Due to the support of Pachamama Alliance, the Achuar have been able to acquire full ownership over almost 1.8 million hectares of rainforest, securing the rights of the indigenous population and the protection of nature.
  • As a result of this success, the Achuar are now allied with and collaborate with similar indigenous peoples in Peru, Colombia, Brazil and Bolivia.
  • To address the task of ‘changing the dream of the modern world”, Pachamama Alliance launched the ‘Awakening the Dreamer Symposium’ in 2005. In 10 years, many thousands of people around the world have participated in these symposia. The aim of the Symposium is to awaken the participants to the possibility of "bringing forth an environmentally sustainable, spiritually fulfilling and socially just human presence on our planet." The Symposium includes knowledge of indigenous peoples in dealing with modern crises, and an awakening to the issues facing humanity all over the planet in these three domains. With over 4000 volunteers trained to deliver the Symposium, symposia have been delivered in 72 countries, and in 13 languages.
  • Pachamama Alliance recently launched a new initiative called the ‘Game Changer Intensive”, a 6-week online course designed to awaken the citizen activist in participants and to educate them in effective action - especially in carefully elected issues for the United States. To date, many participants have been from outside the U.S., so plans are to adapt the program for other parts of the world.
