Navdanya

Navdanya is an Indian organization, founded in 1987 by scientist and environmental activist dr. Vandana Shiva. The organization is a pioneer in the field of biodiversity, promotes organic farming and fair trade, and protects the rights of small local farmers and communities. The organization has spread over the whole of India and collaborates with partner organizations and farmers networks.

Navdanya is committed to the conservation of biodiversity by, amongst others, protection and preservation of crops, plants and seeds, which are distributed amongst local farmers.

The organization has its own seedbank, as well as a 45 hectare farm in Uttrakhand, Northern India. Up to date, over 5 000 crop varieties have been successfully collected on this farm, including 3 000 rice varieties, 150 wheat varieties, 150 bean varieties (brown beans, rajma), 15 millet varieties and several types of leguminous and other vegetables, medicinal plants, etc.

Navdanya works with targeted information- and educational programmes, aimed at preserving indigenous knowledge, culture and agricultural methods. The organization aspires to Earth democracy and promotes fair distribution of seeds, food, water and land.

For this reason, Navdanya campaigns, together with many other organizations, against multinationals patenting crops and food, as well as against companies privatising land and water at the expense of local populations. Land, water, seed and food are not private property, but belong to the community for which they represent a source of livelihood.

Navdanya has investigated the dangers of chemical farming, the costs of industrial agriculture and the risks of genetic engineering. This research shows that, contrary to prevailing beliefs, ecological agriculture is very productive and offers a sustainable solution to hunger and poverty.

Navdanya now counts over 650 000 members (farming families) in seventeen Indian states. The number of communal seedbanks has increased to over one hundred. Over the past 25 years, Navdanya has trained more than 500, 000 farmers and farmer’s wives, students, civil servants and representatives of local and national governments in biodiversity and biological agriculture.
