Meer Democratie

In the beginning of 2015 a group of Dutch citizens founded 'Meer Democratie' (‘More Democracy’). ‘More Democracy’ is a movement campaigning for improving and deepening democracy in the Netherlands and Europe. The organization wants citizens to be in charge in democracy instead of decisions being made over their heads.

The initiators of this platform are promoting ‘direct democracy’, a form of democracy in which citizens can have their say about the laws and regulations. They want to reach this change via the following goals:

  • the introduction of binding citizen-initiated referendums and popular initiatives (like in Switzerland);
  • introduction of direct elections for mayors, king’s commissioners and prime ministers;
  • opening up public appointments for all citizens, not just members of the established political parties (as is the case in The Netherlands now);
  • introduction of a mixed voting system (as in Germany) that ensures parliamentarians have a direct mandate from their voters;
  • better rules for petitions and citizen initiatives;
  • the introduction of ‘community rights’ (as in the United Kingdom) for initiatives that perform public tasks;
  • better information rights for citizens;
  • a fundamental reform of the European Union.

'More Democracy's' forerunner, 'the Referendum Platform', achieved considerable successes with the introduction of referendum and initiative rights in The Netherlands and they have been a driving force behind the national referendum law that will go into force on 1 July 2015. More on Referendum Platform can be found here: Referendum Platform.

'More Democracy' is non-partisan and financed largely by donations from individuals and grants. They are members of Democracy International, the international alliance for direct democracy with representatives in more than 40 countries.
