Global Justice Now

Have you ever wondered why despite decades of aid more than a billion people still live on less than a dollar a day? Global Justice Now has wondered, and since 1970 campaigns against the root causes of poverty and inequality. Global Justice Now is a democratically-governed movement made up of local campaign groups based in towns and cities around the UK. Global Justice Now strives for a world that is free from poverty and based on the principles of equity, solidarity and justice.

Global Justice Now was founded by bringing together a number of groups which had been campaigning against world poverty during the late 1960s. They broke new ground by focusing on the causes of poverty and demanding policy changes rather than charitable giving. Since then, Global Justice Now has evolved into a democratic, politically independent organization, with 15,000 supporters and a network of 60 local groups across the UK.

According to Global Justice Now global poverty is not inevitable and it did not come into being by accident. Poverty is a direct result of government policies, economic structures and corporate behaviour. Global Justice Now states that it is our common responsibility to try to change the structures and policies that keep people poor, and they aim their efforts first of all on the British government and companies.

Global Justice Now is politically and financially independent and the majority of their funding comes from individual members and supporters. Global Justice Now works together with many local activists, civil society organizations, social movements, politicians and stakeholders of all persuasions in the UK, Europe and many third world countries.

Global Justice Now is campaigning for a range of issues, from opposing water privatization to the protection of local communities against land grabbing or the fight against financial speculation on food and other commodities. As part of a global movement for social and economic justice Global Justice Now researches and promotes positive alternatives for a corporate-led economy.

Global Justice Now has offices in London and Edinburgh.
