Gaia Foundation

The Gaia Foundation is committed to reviving and protecting cultural and biological diversity and aims to restore a respectful relationship with the Earth. Together with long-term partners in Africa, South America, Asia and Europe, Gaia works with local communities to secure land, seed, food and water sovereignty. By reviving indigenous knowledge and protecting sacred natural sites, local self-governance is strengthened.

Gaia makes a long-term commitment with their partners to address the root causes of today's most pressing ecological, social and economic injustices. Their work is founded on the recognition that the Earth is a dynamic living whole, whose complex processes have maintained the conditions for life to evolve over millions of years. Humans are an integral part of these living processes and depend on them for their well-being.

The idea of creating the Gaia Foundation emerged in the mid-1980s when Liz Hosken, Edward Posey, José Lutzenberger, Wangari Maathai, Vandana Shiva and other ecological pioneers, met to discuss the growing global crises after four decades of development - mass extinction of species, ecological degradation, social and economic inequity and more. Their common vision is both to alert people to the root causes of the crises and also to demonstrate that "another way is possible". With 25 years of expertise Gaia continues to work for social and ecological justice.
