back to the overview

GRAIN (Genetic Resources Action International)  is a small international non-profit organisation that works to support small farmers and social movements in their struggle for community-controlled and biodiversity-based food systems. Their support takes the form of independent research and analysis, networking at local, regional and international levels, and fostering new forms of cooperation and alliance-building. Most of GRAIN's work is oriented towards, and carried out in, Africa, Asia and Latin America. GRAIN's information outputs are prodigious: for a small team scattered internationally, the information they provide to those who defend biodiversity is considerable and is widely used.

Launched in the 1980s with a focus on the dramatic loss of genetic biodiversity on farms, GRAIN started to concentrate more and more on the real alternatives that were being developed on the ground, in the South. Around the world, and at local level, many groups had begun rescuing local seeds and traditional knowledge while building and defending sustainable biodiversity-based food systems under the control of local communities. At the same time, these groups were turning their backs on the laboratory developed  'solutions'  that had thus far only led farmers into deeper trouble.

By the turn of the century, GRAIN had transformed itself from a mostly Europe-based information and lobbying group into a dynamic and international collective.

GRAIN has two small coordination offices, one in Barcelona, Spain, and one in Los Banos, the Phillippines.
