Corporate Europe Observatory (CEO)

Corporate Europe Observatory (CEO) is a research and campaign Group, working to expose and challenge the privileged access and influence enjoyed by corporations and their lobby groups in EU policy making.

According to CEO the corporate capture of EU decision-making leads to policies that exacerbate social injustice and accelerate environmental destruction across the world. Reducing the power and grip of large cooperatives on politics is crucial in order to address global problems such as poverty, climate change, social injustice, hunger and environmental degradation.

Corporate Europe Observatory works in close alliance with public interest groups and social movements in and outside Europe to develop alternatives to the dominance of corporate power. CEO tries to make the work of lobbyist visible and transparent. Corporate Europe Observatory monitors and publishes about the influence of lobbyists concerning Climate & Energy, EU economic governance, Trade and Investment and Agribusiness.

As part of their campaign CEO organizes special tours around the main lobby offices in Brussels. Participants see where these offices are located, learn which politicians are regular visitors of influential companies and get a better picture of what corporations have achieved by lobbying. According to CEO Brussels is the playground for about 30,000 lobbyists.

CEO is concerned about the undermining of democracy. They note that more and more companies start lawsuits against government legislation. Quite often these lawsuits are conducted on the basis of already existing trade and investment agreements that contain excessive rights for (foreign) investors. The democratic rights of citizens are no longer protected.

Through an ambitious work program of research, outreach and campaigning in the next years, Corporate Europe Observatory wants to raise awareness and build political pressure for the EU institutions to embrace effective lobby transparency, stricter ethics rules and other reforms to boost democratic accountability.
