Cooperation Jackson

Cooperation Jackson is an emerging cooperative network of interconnected yet independent institutions including an incubator and training center, a cooperative bank and a federation of established cooperatives. Together, they're exploring the potential of cooperatives to transform the local communities in the city of Jackson in the State of Mississippi.

Cooperation Jackson has set a goal to become a leader in the global cooperative movement and strives for economic democracy. One of their primary objectives is to have a minimum of 10 percent of the jobs in Jackson be drawn directly from the federation of worker cooperatives and they strive to produce 20 percent of the city’s GNP.

In 2014 Cooperation Jackson hosted the Jackson Rising, a New Economies Conference, to lay the foundation for the transformation of the city and establish it as a center for economic democracy in the USA. Among other things, the organization teaches people about the importance of worker cooperatives and how to create one.

With a median household of just over $37,000, Mississippi is the poorest state in the United States. According to Cooperation Jackson this makes the people eager to build a solidarity economy based on the principles of cooperation and sharing, social responsibility, sustainability, equity and justice. Instead of enforcing a culture of cutthroat competition, the cooperation wants to build cultures and communities of cooperation.

Currently Cooperation Jackson is working on the realization of the following cooperatives: Waste Management Cooperative; Recycling (Sorting) and Composting Cooperative; Recycling (Processing and Manufacture) Cooperative; Construction Worker/Skilled Labour Cooperative; Day-Labour/Temp Worker Cooperative; Solar Insulation/Green Retrofitting Cooperative; Auto Repair Cooperative; Urban Farming Cooperative; Organic Food Bank; Organic Food Processing Factory; Food Service/Catering Cooperative; Health Care Cooperative; Child-Care Cooperative; Birth work/Reproductive Justice; Housing Cooperative; Hotel/Motel Cooperative; Gas/Fueling Station Cooperative; Industrial Laundry Cooperative; Security services and Arts and Cultural Production.
