Bankwatch

CEE Bankwatch Network is an international non-governmental organisation (NGO) with member organisations from countries across central and eastern Europe (CEE). They monitor the activities of international financial institutions (IFIs) which operate in the region and promote environmentally, socially and economically sustainable alternatives to their policies and projects.

They challenge international financial institutions not to finance environmentally and socially harmful investments. Bankwatch calls for public money being spent on climate-friendly development that is not driven by economic growth per se but by benefits to society and the environment in economically sustainable ways.

Bankwatch strives for an environmentally, socially and economically just world, built on solidarity, participation and respect for ecological limits. In this world people enjoy fulfilling lives and are aware of and responsible for the consequences of their actions. Their work focuses on four themes, namely energy and climate; transport; resource efficiency and waste management; and social and economic impacts.

Bankwatch monitors the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the European Investment Bank (EIB), which is the world biggest public lending institute, and the European Structural and Cohesion Funds (EU funds) which are the key funds to shape the EU's regional development.

Bankwatch was set up in 1995 and has offices in Belgium and the Czech Republic. Bankwatch is a membership organisation. Most members are environmental NGOs from central and eastern Europe, Caucasus, Central Asia and Russia. Member groups are the key driving force of the organisation and take the decisions about its development. The highest decision-making body of the organisation is the General Meeting, which consists of the representatives of full Bankwatch member groups.
